Timber used in houtland garden play equipment - A Natural Resource

The wood used in our houtland wooden play equipment is a natural resource which is subject to the influence of the moisture content of the air and ground. In warm, sunny weather the timber contracts and in wet weather it expands. These stresses can cause cracks of up to 3% of the circumference of the timber, sometimes running to the centre and also the length of the timber. This is perfectly normal and has been allowed for in calculating the structural stability and strength of each component.

Treatment of timbers used in wooden garden play equipment.

Hout-land wooden play equipment, which includes climbing frames, play towers, swings & slides, is made of selected Spruce and Pine. All the timber used in the wooden play equipment is treated against rot and insect infestation. The timber is cut, milled and drilled prior to entering the kilns for pressure treatment and the solution used is non-toxic, free from arsenic and in general use for childrens wooden play equipment and wooden garden play equipment.

Round Wood vs Square Wood

Round wood from smaller trees is specially selected for strength and durability. These timbers are strong and less costly than those sawn from larger trees and are produced through the selective thinning of managed forests. The use of sawn square timbers reduces cracking and splitting in the surface of the wood because the timbers are mainly milled outside the heart wood. The timber is naturally seasoned and dried before it is cut in order to prevent twisting and shrinking. The durability and strength of the round and square cut timbers, as used in houtland childens play equipment, are the same.

Siting your garden play equipment

Our houtland wooden play equipment is designed to be set up and used in private domestic gardens by children between the ages of 3 and 12 and should be assembled on a reasonably level grassed surface. For swings, 3 metres (approx. 10ft) of clear space should be left either side of the main horizontal swing beam. We strongly recommend that any garden play equipment is securely fixed to the ground using the ground anchors supplied.

Maintenance of childrens garden play equipment (every three months or so)

Check the tightness of all the nuts and coach screws. If the weather is dry or the play equipment is heavily used, check monthly.
Check all the timber components, ropes, slides, accessories, fixings and ground anchors for security and wear and tear to ensure that the play equipment is safe to use. Check for splintering and rough or sharp edges. Sand down accordingly.

Guarantee

The timber components of Houtland play equipement are guaranteed for 10 years against structural failure caused by rot. All ropes and accessories carry a years guarantee against structural failure caused by rot. Cracks and "shakes" in the wood are perfectly normal and are excluded from this warranty. The guarantee is subject to correct installation and maintenance and normal residential use in private gardens by children between the ages of 3 and 12. Commercial use will invalidate the warranty.
